Barnstaple Town managers Kevin Darch and Dave Griffiths paid testament to their squad after their 1-1 draw with Bideford on Boxing Day.

A late goal from Nathan Cooper saw Barnstaple earn a point in the North Devon derby, cancelling out Craig Duff’s strike for the Robins shortly after half time.

It was a first point in five games for Barum, and after their second game in charge, Darch and Griffiths are hoping the result will give them a confidence boost for the fixtures to come.

“I’m just delighted for the lads that they’ve finally got something out of the game, because they’ve worked hard over the last three weeks and haven’t had much joy. There hasn’t been much in the games but today it was nice to get something,” said Darch.

“The lads that have stayed are a credit to themselves and have shown a togetherness and it’s helped us get a point today.

“You don’t get anything if you don’t work as a team and today they did, so I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Griffiths added: “It sums up our season really, we had two great chances but didn’t take them and we thought ‘here we go again’, but in fairness they battled 100 per cent all the way through.

“It would have been an injustice if we’d lost that one 1-0.”

Bideford manager Sean Joyce was left to rue his side letting a 1-0 lead go for the second home game in a row.

The Robins are now without a win in four games and have slid down to eighth in League South West, and while conditions on Boxing Day were atrocious, Joyce is calling on his side to be more professional in seeing games out.

“It was an atrocious day, so fair play to two teams trying to get the game on and play on it. We need quick ball and the pitch killed us for that,” he said.

“They came down with a five minute game plan today and it’s worked.

“We got the goal and I couldn’t see them scoring, but then I couldn’t see Yate scoring the other week.

“When we’re winning 1-0 we should be controlling games and seeing them out, but two games at home we’ve thrown away by not being professional.

“We worked our socks off for 89 minutes and were the better team.

“We could have been sat in here talking about a 1-0 win and a good, solid performance where you roll your sleeves up and get it out the way on a horrible day, but we’re not – we’re discussing how disappointing it is that we’ve drawn 1-1.”
