Borough bogey strikes again

15:33 08 January 2013

The Gosport Borough bogey struck again as Bideford lost 2-0 to the Hampshire side for the third time this season.

Beaten only once in their previous seven matches, a much-improved Robins took the pitch on Saturday and they deserved more from an encounter they bossed for long periods.

But an outstanding performance by home keeper Nathan Ashmore and a purple patch towards the end of the first half, capitalised on by classy striker Adam Wilde, saw the home team to success.

Bideford started strongly and only a superb double save by Ashmore denied Matt Andrew and opening goal. Ian Sampson also saw a shot go just wide and another Andrew strike was blocked by Gosport defender Brett Poate.

But midway through the opening half the home side enjoyed their best spell as Wilde snapped up a chance, picking up a punched clearance by Bideford keeper Paul Hider and shooting into the net over the heads of the visiting defence.

Five minutes before half-time and it was 2-0 as Wilde struck again with a free-kick curled around the wall and in off the post.

The second half belonged to Bideford. Rob Farkins and Aaron Harper-Penman marshalled a resolute defence while the Matts - Hockley, Bye and Andrew ran the middle of the park. But they could not find a goal.

Andrew saw another fine effort come back off the bar while chances for subsittutes Ellis Laight and Richard Groves were thwarted by the inspired home keeper.

Bideford entertain Banbury United at the Sports Ground this Saturday and next Tuesday will finally complete their St Luke’s Devon Bowl clash away to Elburton Villa - at the fifth time of asking. It should have been completed by January 1 and this time, should the Elburton pitch not be playable, the game will be switched to Bideford.
