The Robins were beaten 4-1 in Division One South and West on Saturday

Bideford suffered their first Southern League defeat since January 2 on Saturday.

The Robins were beaten 4-1 by Swindon Supermarine in Division One South and West.

The defeat almost certainly ends Bideford’s slim chances of making it into the play-offs, with the gap between them and fifth-placed Evesham United now 15 points with seven games left.

Ben Watson had given the visitors the lead after 15 minutes, slotting home after Kevin Squire laid the ball back to him.

The home side were able to get back into the game from the penalty spot after 33 minutes.

A dubious decision saw Matt Bye penalised for a push on Josh Parsons and Brad Hooper slotted the resulting spot-kick.

Parsons gave Supermarine the lead just before the break, beating the offside line before finding a finish.

He also got Swindon’s third some six minutes from time, with a side-footed finish.

Ryan Campbell rounded the defeat off for Bideford two minutes later, getting on the end of a Connor Thompson cross to volley home.

Manager Sean Joyce was left to rue the penalty decision against his captain.

“After we scored we were the better team,” he said.

“It was comfotable – if anything it was too comfortable.

“The penalty was given against Matt Bye and it was never a penalty in a million years.

“After that we lost our discipline and our shape, and that’s me included. It was a massive turning point.

“We didn’t play well, and we were off it, but the referee’s decisions made it a lot harder than it should have been.

“They deserved it in the end though and I’ve got no problem with that.”

The result ends a nine-game unbeaten run for the Robins.

They will be looking to get back on track on Saturday when they welcome North Leigh to the Sports Ground.

Their opponents are without a win from their last six games.

With his side’s play-off charge ending, Joyce hinted he may look to use a different shape for Saturday’s game.
