Banbury United 1-0 Bideford

Bideford’s promotion push suffered a slight set-back on Saturday as they went down by a goal to nil at Banbury United.

The Robins went behind in the 19th minute when they conceded their first goal for five hours of league football. Banbury had started the better of the two sides and took the lead their play deserved when Marvin Martin headed in the rebound following a good save by Bideford ‘keeper Steve Oliver.

Oliver was kept busy early on and again had to spring into action to deny Anderson Pinto and then Marcus Green before the half hour mark.

The Robins failed to create a clear-cut opportunity of their own until just past half an hour, when Craig Duff blazed over from eight yards.

Conditions were tough for both sides, and when the wind and rain picked up again in dramatic fashion in the 35th minute the referee had no choice but to take the players off the field– and they didn’t hang about in sprinting back to the changing rooms.

The break only lasted for ten minutes, but had clearly done Bideford some good as they carved out some good opportunities, with Duff’s header coming back off the post only two minutes after the re-start.

Biddy finally looked the more likely to score, and wouldn’t have wanted the half time whistle when it came.

Despite this, it was the Robins who continued to look the more likely and early in the second half Kevin Squire found himself in on goal but couldn’t find a way pasy Banbury ‘keeper Kwame Fordah.

Fordah was called into action again in the 58th minute, this time making a smart save to keep out a Nick barker free-kick, before producing the save of the match in the 77th minute to keep out a Duff strike which had goal written all over it.

But despite their pressure, it was not to be Bideford’s day as their three-game unbeaten run came to an end.

The Robins sit fourth in the Calor League Southern Premier and head to Frome Town on Wednesday night, before entertaining Burnham at the Sports Ground on Saturday.
