Bideford let a half-time lead slip to lose 2-1 to Yate Town in Evo-Stik League South West this afternoon (Saturday).

Ryan Turner gave the Robins what was a deserved lead at half-time, rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home after the ball fell to him inside 15 minutes.

But goals in the 70th and 85th minutes from Steven Davies saw the visitors leave the Sports Ground with three points.

The result means Bideford fail to extend their unbeaten run to five games and miss a valuable chance to move up the table on what was a frustrating afternoon for Sean Joyce’s side.

Bideford enjoyed success out wide early on and it was Sean Downing’s cut in from the right that brought the first goal. His shot was parried by Harvey Rivers into the path of Turner, who calmly slotted the ball home to make it 1-0.

The Robins started to boss proceeding following the goal. Downing had their best chance to extend the lead but saw his effort go over the bar.

For all Bideford’s dominance, Yate did enjoy some space in behind the home defence and went close through Mason Evans. His effort flashed across Steve Oliver and came back off the angle in their only real chance of the first half.

Downing again, having a good afternoon on the right burst into the box and laid it off to top goal scorer Ben Seymour but his first touch let him down as the ball was cleared for a corner, signalling the end of the first half.

The second period started slowly, with not much to choose between the two sides and neither managing to create any real clear cut chances early on.

Yate, pushing for an equaliser went close after substitute Nsoui Mzungwana’s cross deflected out to Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist, who hit a first time strike against the cross bar.

That appeared to lift the spirits of the away side as they continued to press, and they were rewarded on the 70 minute mark when Davies got the equaliser. This time it was Oliver who would parry a shot into the path of the Yate stiker, who tapped the ball into the empty net.

The Robins were sparked into life following a disappointing spell and had a couple of quick chances. Downing had the first, putting his strike up over the bar, before Turner saw a low shot go just wide of the right post.

The visitors were to have the last laugh though as a quick breakaway following a string of chances for Bideford saw Davies round Oliver to slot the ball home and give them a 2-1 lead.

In what were desperate scenes for Bideford at the end, manager Joyce brought on centre-back Scott Beattie to play up front but it didn’t prove a fruitful choice as they fell to their first defeat in four games.
