Bideford’s North up for coach of the year award

Bideford AFC Youth head coach Pete North is a finalist for the Devon Sports Awards prize

POPULAR Bideford coach Pete North is a finalist for this year’s Devon Sports Awards coach of the year.

Pete, who is well known in North Devon for his work coaching football in schools, has also worked with Arsenal Soccer Schools, Torquay Development Centre and is now the head coach at Bideford AFC Youth.

Pete was Devon FA Coach of the Year in 2012, but The Devon Sports Awards include all sports as well as recognising excellence and commitment.

The awards night, set to be hosted by BBC Spotlight’s Jenny Walrond and featuring guest speaker Kriss Akabusi, will be held at Exeter Chiefs’ Sandy Park on May 16.

“It was a complete surprise to find out that I had been nominated, yet alone that I had been selected as a finalist,” he said. “I look forward to the awards night in May hearing the speakers and meeting the other finalists.”

Bideford Youth secretary Neil Blackburn praised the coach’s vital role in setting up the club.

“Pete works tirelessly as a volunteer, and has been instrumental in a number of new initiatives which has resulted in more and more young people being able to take part in sport,” he said.

“He was instrumental in the formation of the club and he now leads a team of 22 qualified coaches. I could not possibly list all of the areas in which he has contributed, but this has included helping to set up girls’ football at Bideford AFC, introducing an under 18 team, producing and delivering a structured training programme and a regular colour programme which celebrates the achievements within the club.

“He is always keen to keep on learning by attending courses and passing on his own knowledge to others.”
