Finalists take the lion’s share of the spoils as local competition turns a good profit

TORRIDGE Cup finalists Bideford Reserves and Torridgeside were the biggest beneficiaries of this year’s cup payouts – boosted by an attendance in excess of 500 for this year’s final.

Bideford picked up £582, with Torrigeside netting £560 from the £1,400 prize fund.

2013/14 semi-finalists Bradworthy and Fremington received £62 and £40 respectively, while each of Ashwater, Braunton and Bradworthy picked up £50 for the ‘performance of the round’.

Established in 1923, the Torridge Cup is unique in North Devon in giving a share of the profits from the turnstiles in the semi-finals and final back to the teams involved.

Competition secretary Scott Hill said: “This season was again a very good one and we are very pleased to build on the success of the last few years. The semi-finals of Fremington versus Torridgeside and Bradworthy versus Bideford were both well attended and the final crowd of over 500 means the competition made a healthy profit and thus more money can be pumped back into local football.

“We will be looking to build on this season’s success and plough back even more money into North Devon football next year.

“Our entry fee is still only £10, so all clubs, big or small, have virtually nothing to lose.”
