Dave Smith Memorial Cup awarded to Barum
BARNSTAPLE’S warm welcome for rugby referees has been recognised by the presentation of a new award.
The Dave Smith Memorial Cup remembers a well-known ex-Somerset rugby referee and advisor who died in a car crash last year.
Smith was a frequent visitor to Barnstaple to compile reports on referees making their way up the league ladder.
He died on his way from his home near Bath to watch a match in Worcester last October.
South West Group referees who officiate in Barnstaple’s league were asked to nominate the club they most like to visit. Barum got an overwhelming thumbs up!
Michele Kennedy, who was Smith’s partner, presented the cup before last Saturday’s game against Old Redcliffians at Pottington Road.
Among the distinguished guests at the presentation were former RFU president Paul Murphy, Somerset RFU secretary Andy Shorney, Mike Curling as president of Somerset RRS and South West Group officials David Thomas, Ian Woodgate and Terry Friend.
Said Friend: “Barnstaple were their usual excellent hosts, putting on a meal for the people attending.
“A sad day for Michele was made as pleasant as possible by the Barnstaple welcome and hospitality.
“Thanks especially go to Barnstaple chairman Trevor Shaddick, who ensured the day went smoothly and people wanted for nothing.”
