Barnstaple FC press ahead

18:50 26 February 2013

Barnstaple FC reinforced their position at the top of the table with a 5-2 win at home to third-placed Ilfracombe Reserves.

There was just one goal in it at the break, then a see-saw opening 15 minutes of the second half saw the scores levelled at 2-2 and it stayed that way until the final 20 minutes when Barnstaple pulled steadily away.

Connor Nash scored a hat-trick and other Barnstaple goals came from Sam Phillips and an Andy Vernon penalty, while Colin Woodcock netted both for Ilfracombe.

Chiefs slip

Contenders Anchor Chiefs were held to a 2-2 draw by bottom-of-the-table Sporting Barum

Chiefs made a solid start with a goal in the 19th minute by Darren Reeks. But after having a man sent off and playing the remaining three-quarters of the game with 10 men they found it hard to adjust and went into half time losing 1-2.

The second half saw the Chiefs revitalised. A goal by Trevor May half pulled them level and it was the Chiefs who looked the most dangerous, but they could not find a winner.

Northam Lions Reserves opened the scoring at home to Landkey through Ali Bright. But then the tables turned as Darren Floyd (2) James Jackson and Connor White gave Landkey a 4-1 win.

Lions could have added a late penalty, but Danny Woolacott’s shot was saved by Landkey’s stand-in keeper, their manager Wayne Hommell.

Next day Landkey were beaten 5-2 by a mixture of Braunton 3rds and 4ths in the Hansen Cup quarter-finals.

Young Macauley Hommell took his turn between the sticks for Landkey, but had to go off injured after colliding with an oncoming forward in the opening five minutes. Connor Rooke then went in goal and saved the resulting penalty.

But after that it went downhill for Landkey, despite goals by Andrew Barker and James Jackson.

Seasiders draw

Clovelly’s 1-1 draw at Woolacombe was a good result after having lost to them 8-2 last year.

This time, missing six defenders, they set up hard to beat and reaped their reward with a goal from man of the match Allan Lawrence from close range midway into the first half. Woolacombe equalised from a header from a free kick before half time.

The Equalizers versus High Bickington match was a game of three penalties.

High Bick took the lead through Chris Hutchings only to give away two penalties within five minutes and fall 2-1 behind at the break as Phil Norman netted them both.

Thomas Sanders scored to bring the sides level again before a High Bick penalty by Darren Avery gave them the points 3-2.

Hartland maintained their challenge with a 4-1 win at home to Barnstaple AAC Reserves while lowly Torrington Reserves had a good 2-1 result away to Braunton 3rds.
