Barnstaple FC continue their winning ways

15:31 08 January 2013

DESPITE being without top scorer Connor Clifford, who has moved on to Barnstaple Town, unbeaten Barnstaple FC continued their winning ways with a 2-0 result away to Torridgeside Reserves.

Despite heavy conditions and a long lay-off, both sides contributed to a good game.

Barnstaple made a speedy start, with Stuart McKinnon scoring after only five minutes. This remained all that separated the sides until midway through the second half, when Tom Nash struck for a second goal.

Torridgeside had their chances but could not reply.

Anchor Chiefs moved up to third following their 6-1 win over bottom side Northam Lions Reserves, who now comprise their third team.

Chiefs got off to a great start when Joe Barker headed home in the fifth minute from a Tom Phipps cross. The pair combined again for a second Barker headed goal on 20 minutes. Jesse Curtis struck a sweet goal in the 33rd minute and Barker completed his first hat-trick for the Chiefs in the 38th for a 4-0 interval lead.

Lions were awarded a penalty six minutes into the second half and although Chiefs’ keeper Mark Tattersall saved the spotkick, Lions substitute Steve Robinson beat him to the rebound to pull a goal back. But a lot possession was rewarded when Chiefs’ top scorer Darren Reeks hit their fifth goal before being taken offinjured. Matt Cloak hit a great sixth in the closing minute.

Woolacombe came out on top by the odd goal of seven in what should have been a home game with Equalizers, but which was switched to a muddy Rock Park.

They were 4-0 up and cruising before Equalizers almost lived up to their name with three goals in the last 15 minutes.

Woolacombe scorers were Chay Isaac (2), Adam Baxter and centre back Mark Churchill, with Equalizers replying through Damian Green (2) and Matthew Mitchell.

Clovelly went 3-0 up away to Sporting Barum with goals by Sam Synnott and Ian Chan (2) before an own goal just before the break let their hosts back to 3-1 at half-time. Simon Beeby restored the three-goal gap with a second-half free-kick before Sporting gained a second with a late penalty.

Torrington Reserves were thankful to be able to use the school pitch for their match at home to Barnstaple AAC Reserves and thankful also for a welcome three points with a 2-1 win.

After a goalless opening half an own goal early in the second period broke the stalemate and within 10 minutes Torrington were 2-0 up thanks to a Dan Baugh strike.

The Ammies pressed to get back into the game and pulled a goal back through Craig Horrell, but had left it too late.
