Several committee members resign amid club’s boardroom divisions

BARNSTAPLE Town chairman Warren Crossley has admitted he may be forced to ‘step aside temporarily’ if problems between the club’s board members aren’t resolved soon.

The club has been rocked by divisions on the club’s committee, which met on February 2 to give a vote of no confidence in Mr Crossley.

But he claims the meeting ‘was not in line with the constitution of the football club’, and has since received a letter of apology from another board member.

A number of the club’s committee have now quit their posts, as they have become ‘increasingly disillusioned’ with the situation.

Club historian John Clarke, Paul Turner, Chris Peyton and youth and community officer Lee Smith have all now left the club.

Mr Smith wrote to the Gazette that ‘‘things have come to a head at the club and my position as a result has become untenable’.

“I love Barnstaple Town Football Club, but cannot carry on due to a clash of personalities and a disagreement about the direction the club will now go in,” continued Mr Smith’s letter.

“I sincerely wish the club every success for the future, but will be resuming my position as an avid supporter attending every home game, as I have done since 1980.”

Mr Crossley’s statement concluded: “It is a crying shame that the club finds itself in this position as never before did the club have such an opportunity to push on.”
