Final home game of the season ends in defeat for Barum in Division One South and West

Barnstaple Town were unable to give outgoing Aaron Harper-Penman and Barry Yeo a winning send-off from Mill Road this afternoon, losing 4-0 to Tiverton Town in the Southern League.

In his last home game, Harper-Penman was shown a straight red card with 20 minutes remaining for a challenge on Levi Landricombe from behind.

It was hardly the way the Barnstaple skipper would have wanted to walk off the pitch after 11 seasons at the club over 14 years, but he received an ovation from the 366 supporters in attendance on Bank Holiday Monday nonetheless.

The Landricombe brothers did the damage for Tiverton. Michael gave the visitors the lead after 14 minutes before Levi scored the second and set up the third after half-time.

Tom Bath added the fourth with the final kick of the game.

With their opponents guaranteed a play-off berth, it was never going to be an easy task for a dream ending, but Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Hereford would have gone some way to instilling a bit more confidence.

By the end of the game it was clear that result had taken a lot out of Yeo’s side.

Although the first half was a game of few chances, it was the visitors who enjoyed the lion’s share of sights at goal.

Landricombe was celebrating putting Tiverton ahead just two minutes after Oliver and then the post had thwarted efforts by Tom Bath and Scott Rogers.

The Barnstaple keeper played an unfortunate role in the goal, with Landricombe’s effort from 25 yards striking the underside of the bar only to bounce off Oliver’s back and into the goal.

Oliver and the Barnstaple defence had worked hard to keep Tiverton largely at bay in the first half, but the visitors soon picked them apart after the break.

Levi Landricombe latched onto a through ball five minutes after the restart. Left one-on-one with Oliver, he sent a delicate lob over the keeper which landed in the goal.

The number 10 was key in Tiverton’s third some nine minutes later as, running away from goal, he clipped a backheel into the path of Jamie Short.

The midfielder made no mistake with the ball that was put in front of him, drilling a low shot past Oliver at his near post.

Yeo made changes straight away, with Shaun Copp and Jed Harper-Penman brought on to give Barnstaple more attacking output.

But Mill Road’s mood was flattened with 10 minutes remaining when referee Martin Underhay brandished a straight red card for the Barnstaple captain for an alleged stamp on Levi Landricombe.

The visitors rubbed salt into the wound with the last action of the game, when Bath nodded in a Tiegan Rosenquest corner.
