Barnstaple Town 2-1 Westbury United
BARNSTAPLE Town fought back to win an eventful game against Westbury United at Mill Road on Saturday.
Town tightened their grip on third spot in the Toolstation Western League First division with a 2-1 win in a game which will be remembered for a torrential downpour which made play near impossible.
Barnstaple had the better of the first half and could easily have gone in ahead at half time, but failed to make the most of their chances.
Westbury did very little to trouble the Barnstaple goal in the first half, until an effort just before the break came back off the post.
The visitors went in front early on in the second half with a firm strike, which seemed to spark Barnstaple into life.
They attacked with verve and found the equaliser almost instantly after a good move was finished off well by attacker Ryan Turner.
And Town were soon in front when Turner was brought down in the area and Billy Tucker stepped up to convert the penalty.
Barnstaple then had to see out the final moments of the match with 10 men after Shaun Copp saw red for violent conduct, but they managed to do so and picked up another three points.
Barry Yeo’s men now need just one point from their final two games to secure third, a good achievement after their mid-season lull in form.
Barnstaple finish their season this week with two games in three days. They host Devizes Town on Saturday and travel to Westbury United on Bank Holiday Monday.
