Appledore Reserves hold another title challenger

This week’s rain-affected North Devon Gazette Football League round-up

Appledore Reserves proved that ending Boca Seniors’ perfect record last weekend was no fluke as they picked up a valuable point at third-placed Bideford Reserves.

The game, which finished 1-1, was one of just two North Devon Gazette league matches to survive the uncompromising wet weather this weekend.

Appledore have struggled for consistency in the Premier division so far this season but back-back draws against title contenders will give them renewed belief heading into the second half of their campaign.

The point lifted them to 11th, while it kept Bideford third – now 10 points back from leaders Boca Seniors and five off the pace of Braunton in second.

Boca and Braunton’s second top-of-the-table clash in three weeks was one of the games which couldn’t go ahead and will need to be rearranged, with Braunton looking to get revenge for their 2-1 defeat earlier this month to keep the pressure on their unbeaten title rivals.

Both sides face tough tests this weekend, with Boca travelling to Torridgeside and Braunton at Bideford Reserves.

In the day’s only other game, North Molton Sports Club Reserves were made to work harder than they might have expected to dispatch of South Molton in the Senior division.

North Molton made it six wins in a row in all competitions by coming away 3-2 victors, but it was a performance which will give 14th-placed South Molton great encouragement going forwards.

North Molton took the lead early on in the local derby, before South Molton equalised inside half an hour through James Campbell.

North Molton regained the advantage before half time, and the game looked to be over when they extended their lead to 3-1 with 10 minutes to play.

But South Molton didn’t give up and pulled it back to 3-2 with five minutes left on the clock, though a draw proved just beyond their reach.

The win helped lift North Molton into fourth, with a trip to league leaders Braunton Reserves as their next challenge this Saturday.

All of the games in Intermediate One and Two fell foul of the weather. In Intermediate One, everyone will be hoping for better weather this weekend ahead of third-placed Anchor Chiefs’ clash with leaders Braunton Thirds in a game which could have a huge impact on the title race.

In Intermediate Two, second-placed North Molton Thirds travel to fourth-placed Braunton Fourths, while new leaders Haxton Rangers will be looking for three points when they entertain Georgeham and Croyde Reserves on Saturday.
