The Fishermen came away on the end of a 2-1 defeat, but manager Keith Shapland thought it could have been worse
Appledore came away from their trip to Division One East league leaders Newton Abbot Spurs on the end of a 2-1 defeat on Saturday.
The Fishermen were overrun early in the first half, and had to weather a storm in the first 15 minutes.
The hosts got themselves a goal to the good in that period through a free-kick.
After a change of shape, the visitors shored things up and had chances of their own through Nick Glover and Joe Barker.
They equalised midway through the second half. Jake England’s low cross swung out away from the keeper and was met by an onrushing Ben Whitecross, who broke in from midfield to finish.
The hosts took charge and threw everything forward after the goal, and they were rewarded nine minutes from time with a finish from Jake Chisholm.
Appledore manager Keith Shapland said: “We didn’t disgrace ourselves with the result, especially considering if looked like it could be a cricket score at one point in the first half, and the overall performance after we changed the shape was pleasing.
“They deserved to beat us, but the way we equipped ourselves and the performance we put in, I thought was credible.”
The Fishermen are back at Marshford this Saturday, with St Martins the visitors, and Shapland is hoping his side can start picking up more points.
“We’ve managed to get a settled team now so that’s made a massive difference,” added Shapland.
“The lads who have come in have got used to the pace of the league and have got to know it and their responsibilities.
“Now is the time after Christmas to hopefully go on and get some better results.”
