Burnley fan Keith Shapland says big win softened blow of Lincoln City FA Cup defeat

Tom Marsh scored five goals for Appledore in a 9-1 win against Liverton United on Saturday.

Appledore manager Keith Shapland’s afternoon got off to the worst possible start after news filtered through during the warm-up at Marshford that his beloved Burnley had suffered an FA Cup giant-killing at the hands of non-league Lincoln City.

But he admitted his side’s performance in the South West Peninsula Division One East had ‘softened the blow’.

The Fishermen opened the scoring after two minutes through Mark Cann. They doubled the lead with Marsh’s first after six minutes and romped to 6-0 lead by 25 minutes.

“We bossed it really, we were the better side throughout and particularly in front of goal,” said Shapland.

“We went 2-0 up after six minutes and they gave up after that really.

“I was disappointed to concede but if we scored nine every week you’d be happy.”

While Marsh bagged five, there were two for Brian Levien, as well as singles for Cann and Sam Stephens.

“All the goals were good goals really,” added Shapland.

“Particularly Tom’s second goal, a left foot into the corner, and his last goal as it was a really well-worked team move.

“I was pleased to get the win but we’re not over thinking things or getting too carried away.”

Appledore travel to second-from-bottom Exwick Villa on Saturday and Shapland says he is taking nothing for granted.

“They’ve had some strange results,” he said. “They’ve beat Brixham and Stoke Gabriel; we just need to concentrate on ourselves.”

In other results, Torridgeside lost for the second week in a row, beaten 2-0 at mid-table Crediton United.

T-side travel to third-placed Newton Abbot Spurs on Saturday.

In the Premier, Witheridge were beaten 3-1 at Helston Athletic 3-1. Withy travel to Witheridge Torpoint Athletic on Saturday.

In the Division One West, Holsworthy drew 2-2 at home Mousehole on Saturday, Tudor Placinta and Lee Clarke with the goals for the Magpies.

On Sunday, Adam Smith scored two as Holsworthy beat Tregadillett 2-0 in the Pickard Cup.

This Saturday, Holsworthy are at home to league leaders Sticker.
