Mistakes prove costly for title contenders Pilton

SENIOR Division title contenders Pilton Academicals have dropped points for the second time in two weeks.

The Accies, who had last week’s 2-1 win against Braunton Reserves overturned by league officials due to a mistake on the teamsheet, were beaten on the pitch by South Molton Reserves on Saturday.

The Images took the lead in the second half when Pilton’s Kevin Ten-Bokkel deflected a Mark Power shot into his own net.

The hosts levelled with an own goal of their own following Aaron Yeo’s corner but new signing Paul Brown, who has recently made the switch from North Molton, scored on his debut to give South Molton a memorable win.

On Saturday, the Accies beat North Molton 3-2 in the Holman Cup with goals by Aaron Richmond, Claudio Pinto and Matt Hunt.

Manager Aidan McCarthy said: “It was a much better performance than Saturday but there is still a lot of room for manoeuvre.

“We should’ve scored more but at least we were creating the chances.”

There were no slip ups from leaders Bideford Reserves, who improved on their earlier draw against Chittlehampton Reserves with a 4-0 win.

Joe Grimley scored two and there were singles for Ben Ford and Rikki Williams.

Northam Lions Reserves came from 4-0 down to draw 4-4 with Lynton & Lynmouth at Burrough Farm. Martyn Phillips beat the Lions defence on three occasions and rounded the goalkeeper each time on his way to scoring a hat-trick.

Jack Pugsley looked to have put the game beyond reach when he scored a similar individual effort for Lynton.

But in a dramatic turnaround, Northam scored three in three minutes, Ian Keen and Andrew Spencer capitalising on a bad back pass and two slips by the visiting defence. Andy Fee scored the equaliser from a free-kick.

Lynton manager Jim Mirow said he’d never been involved in a game like it.

“We threw it away in 10 minutes and were lucky to come home with a point,” he said.

Torrington Reserves climbed off the bottom of the table with a 5-1 against Barnstaple AAC Reserves. Kier Rees scored the only goal for the Ammies.

Braunton Reserves beat Woolsery 2-1 with second-half goals by Jordan Darch and Sam McCreadie.

Park United beat Shamwickshire Rovers Reserves 3-1 in the Bideford derby and Wrey Arms were beaten 3-1 at Bude Town.
