Jake Ball selected ahead of North Devon and Somerset seamer after recovering from ankle injury

Craig Overton has missed out on a place in the England team for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

The North Devon and Somerset seamer was edged out by Jake Ball, who has recovered from an ankle injury suffered in a warm-up match on the tour. He was declared fit on Monday.

The move means Overton is left waiting for his Test debut. He featured in all three of England’s tour games, taking eight wickets.

England captain Joe Root said the decision ‘wasn’t an easy one’ in an interview on the ECB website.

He added: “Craig’s come into the squad, and everything that’s been asked of him he’s done brilliantly well.

“But Jake has bowled well when he’s had his opportunities on the tour, and I think the way he goes about things on these surfaces could be really challenging for the Australians.”

The first Ashes Test gets underway this evening, with play starting at midnight.

England: JE Root (Captain), AN Cook, MD Stoneman, JM Vince, DJ Malan, MM Ali, JM Bairstow (wkt), CR Woakes, JT Ball, SCJ Broad, JM Anderson.

Australia (probable): S Smith (Captain), D Warner, C Bancroft, U Khawaja, P Handscomb, S Marsh, T Paine (wkt), M Starc, P Cummins, N Lyon, J Hazlewood.

Umpires: A Dar (Pak) and M Erasmus (SA).

Third umpire: C Gaffaney (NZ).

Match referee: R Richardson (WI).
