Title-chasing Chesham end Bideford’s promotion hopes.
THEY were the thorns in Bideford’s side in a 2-2 draw back on the opening day of the season – and Chesham United’s James Potton and Drew Roberts were the undoing of Bideford again on Saturday.
The second-placed Calor Southern League Premier Division side’s leading scorers were on target in a 4-1 win at the Sports Ground.
It was defender Alex Brown who headed the visitors in front from a free-kick after 15 minutes.
But club top scorer Roberts took his tally to 38 for the season five minutes before the break, firing home after another set-piece breakdown by the hosts.
After the break, things went from bad to worse after a superb double strike by Potton.
The midfielder scored twice in seven minutes to put the game well beyond Bideford, who did manage a consolation goal through Richard Groves with five minutes to go.
With just three games to play this season, the play-offs are now out of reach for the Robins, who sit outside the top five in eighth place on 66 points.
Bideford will travel to Biggleswade Town on Saturday and will host Frome Town in their last home game of the season on Easter Monday.
