NORTH Devon triathlete David Spencer is preparing for the challenge of a lifetime when he competes at The Standard World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, this autumn.

David, 26, from Landkey, only turned to the triathlon four years ago, but has earned his place at the world championships after a series of good results at qualifying competitions.

He has always been interested in sport and fitness and attained his black belt in Taekwondo in 2008.

After that David decided he needed a new challenge and joined the North Devon Tri club.

He said: “In the beginning my swimming was by far the weakest element. But with the guidance of former NDTri coach Alan Ward I embraced the challenge and can now swim well. I got hooked on the sport and wanted to see how far I could go.

“I concentrated on Olympic distance triathlon - 1.5 kilometre swim, 40 kilometre bike and 10 kilometre run - aiming to qualify for the age group World Championships in the 25-29 years category. I competed in the Dambuster triathlon in Leicestershire in June and, with a shortened swim of only one kilometre instead of one-and-a- half due to water coldness, produced a personal best time of 2:03:33. I followed this up a week later at the British Championships, producing another PB time of 2:09:59. There was one further qualifier in early July which I didn’t attend, but afterwards I had an e-mail confirming my place at The Standard World Championships in Auckland New Zealand on October 22.

“I am so pleased to have the opportunity to represent my country at the sport I love. I am now concentrating on doing myself justice at the world championships and seeing how far I can go with triathlon.”
