Newton were last season’s U13 champions and Barnstaple the Plate winners, so it was always going to be a tough encounter.

Barum had an edge up front in the forwards and that made the difference between winning and losing.

A switch of play resulted in a well-executed try in the left corner by Zac Venner-Houlford for a 5-0 Barum lead

Ten minutes into the second half a blind-side move by Will Knill resulted in a try for Matthew Symons, which was converted by Knill.

This only seemed to spur Newton Abbot on and they put on the pressure. Barum defended well, although they had some luck when Newton had a Tom Schaffer try called back for a forward pass.

Matt Giblett and Tom Clarke showed real strength of character in their defending.

Barum now go into the semi-final draw with Cullompton, Topsham and Ivybridge.
