Craig Overton had to leave the field of play with an injury on day two of the third Ashes Test in Perth.

The 23-year-old put in a strong performance with the ball before the injury, taking the wickets of Australian openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft to make up for a disappointing two runs with the bat.

The North Devon and Somerset seamer got the first breakthrough with the hosts on 44, teasing Warner into prodding the ball forward only for him to edge straight into the hands of Johnny Bairstow.

Four overs later he trapped Bancroft lbw - given after a successful review from the visitors.

The England bowler is set to be assessed by the medical team overnight, regarding an aggravated rib injury, which it’s thought he originally sustained during the second test in Adelaide.

Overton was a bright note on what was another story of collapse for England as they limped to 403 all-out after seemingly being in a strong position, following strong knocks from both David Malan (140) and Bairstow (119).

Australia were 203-3 at the close of play on Friday as they continue to chase the first innings haul of the visitors, a win in Perth would secure them the Ashes urn.

Everyone associated with England will hope Overton makes a quick return with his absence, meaning they’ll be a bowler light as they attempt to get their series back on track.

Despite playing no part in the first test ashes test, it has been a relatively successful first Ashes series so far for Overton. He took a healthy four wickets in Adelaide just over a week ago and has now amassed a further two in Perth.
