Bright young talents show the way for new recruits

THE manager and coach of North Devon District’s girls’ cricket teams are calling for more girls to get involved in the sport.

Over the last few weeks, the under 15s and U13s have taken on teams selected from East and West Devon.

Both games were high quality and well fought, with the U15s narrowly defeated by the West in their first game.

But they bounced back last week, scoring 110 to beat the East in windy conditions - and only losing two wickets in the process.

The U13s delivered similar results, with a disappointing defeat to the East following an excellent win over the West a week earlier.

Manager Jan Witheridge and Coach Mark Overton are delighted with the girls’ all round performance.

They have worked hard with the girls over the winter, and both age groups were slick and confident in the field.

Outstanding performances in the inter-district games came from Daisy Meadowcroft (North Devon CC Instow) who scored 63 not out for the U13s in their first match and took her wicket keeping gloves off against West U15 to take three for nine with the ball.

Lauren Bowden (Chulmleigh) also stood out, scoring 51 and 47 not out in her two innings.

Rose Ball (Bideford CC) continues to impress, taking 4/8 in four overs, plus a stunning catch and a run out all in one match.

Rose Ball and Daisy Meadowcroft travel to Loughborough next week for England Development coaching.

All of the girls currently play for their own clubs’ boys or men’s sides, and get their all ladies cricket from district and county representation as well as for the Tarka Girls and newly formed Tarka Ladies teams.

The Tarka Ladies have entered the Devon Ladies League for the first time and are training on Monday evenings at Instow by kind permission of North Devon CC, who have also sponsored the ladies team along with Slee Blackwell.

Any ladies interested in playing should search for ‘ND Tarka Ladies’ on Facebook.
