Bideford ended a seven-game unbeaten run for Filleigh in the B Division

BIDEFORD took a big step towards lifting the B Division title when they won by six wickets at Filleigh.

Filleigh – unbeaten in seven games – had high hopes of turning Bideford over but it was always unlikely after they were skittled for 92.

Filleigh recovered from 11 for four after a duffing up from Paul Heard (3-22) to reach 66 for five thanks to Justin Saker (37).

Once Jamie Lathwell (2-14) and Josh Atkinson (3-18) came into the attack it was downhill all the way to 92 all out. Ryan Bowden hung around for 20.

Bits and pieces got Bideford over the line, the best coming from Jayson Bartolo (27).

One point off Ipplepen this Saturday will ensure Bideford go up. The title will have to wait another week.

Filleigh need 18 points from two games – Ottery and Thorverton to finish – to be 100 per cent safe from relegation.

“We will need to be far better against Ottery on Saturday and hopefully a win there can guarantee our safety,” said Filleigh captain Simon Prideaux.

Assessing the performance against Bideford, Prideaux said: “They bowled and fielded well and put our top order pressure from the first over.

“The ball moved about early on and our batsmen didn’t have an answer to Bideford’s accurate bowling, and some fantastic catching.

“We have batted poorly against Bideford twice now, which is frustrating as I know we can do far better.

“Our bowlers stuck to their task well but with such a low score it was always going to be difficult.”
