County juniors come to Barnstaple

13:25 19 October 2012

JUNIORS from North Devon joined together for the East Devon County U16s tournament at Park School in Barnstaple.

This was the first time a county club tournament had been held in North Devon for well over a decade.

The North Devon teams found it hard initially, but then started to settle and their standard of play improved tremendously.

The Pink team finished third, losing by only two goals to each of the top two teams, and just missed out on a place in the regional league.

Rebbekkah Hoskin, Emily Risden and Heidi Thorne’s defending was outstanding and Christina Brend and Ellie Leaper dominated the mid-court to feed accurately to Millie White and Ellie Stone, who teamed well with Madison Shepherd to net the teams goals.

The Black team finished fifth, with great movement and shooting by Poppy Price and Lucy Burnett and superb control and interceptions from Katie McLagan, Courtey Southwork and Helouise Johnson.

North Devon’s White team finished sixth. Hattie Burgess turned over many passes into the circle to start off their attacks and Holly Sherborne linked with sisters Milly and Anna Squire to convert Hattie’s interceptions to goals.

North Devon teams: Pink - Heidi Thorne, Rebbekkah Hoskin, Emily Risden, Christina Brend, Ellie Leaper, Millie White, Ellie Carter, Madison Shepherd. Black - Helouise Johnson, Katie McLagan, Courtney Southwork, Poppy Price, Alex Ward, Lucy Burnett, Emily Pettett, Aimee Hunter. White - Hattie Burgess, Joanna Nancekivell, Ellen Napier, Imogen Hunter, Charlotte Buttery, Holly Sherborne, Anna Squire, Milly Squire.

THE rain came down yet again in the North Devon League, but that didn’t stop the teams from demonstrating their skills.

There were many close matches.

Venners Bakery Vipers just pipped Titans Neptune, despite a great comeback in the final quarter. Neptune took the lead for the first time with five minutes to go, but Vipers would not give in. The defence of Issy Wilson-North and Laura Guy stood up to Neptune’s players of the match Mel Barnard and Emily Risden and won some crucial interceptions. Alex McKean again brought the ball through the court with Gemma Braunton to enable the shooters to score, despite the best efforts of Neptune’s defence Amber Manley and Ali Keenor.

Carol Anne Sapphires started strongly against Pat Williams Girls, with accurate shooting by Laura Manley and Laura Short. Pat Williams would not let the lead grow too big and they pulled back to within two goals in the final quarter, but Sharon Curtis’ great movement and shooting was not enough to prevent Sapphires taking the win.

In Division 2, Panthers came from behind against Venners Bakery Adders to take the victory in the final few minutes. Sarah Steggles was calm and passed accurately to her team, who capitalised on interceptions to secure the win.

Langtree Re-Unites Rogues and Carol Anne Emeralds started evenly, with Emeralds just nudging ahead. Injury struck in the second quarter, but Langtree remained in touch with great defending by Cheryl Dunn. In the final quarter, however, Emeralds extended their lead and Naomi Williams and Michelle Tomkins finished off each attacking play to confirm their victory.

North Devon Homes and Coodes Cougars were locked in battle throughout. Sarah Shorten and Lynn Hobbs maintained their high standard throughout the match, but it was Lynn’s shooting that just ensured Coodes had the edge, winning by one goal. Milly Squire was not fatigued from the under 16s tournament, leading Carol Anne Golds to Division 3 victory over Venners Misfits.

New team Georgeham Rocks stormed to victory against North Devon Homes Stars. Gemma Adams was once again their outstanding player, leading the team to score 33 goals, even in the pouring rain.
