The year six pupils were winners at a county-wide tournament in Paignton.

St Helen’s Church of England Primary School’s netballers scooped the top prize at the Devon Winter Games.

The Abbotsham school won the tournament at Paignton’s Torbay Leisure Centre after beating Plymouth’s Montpelier Primary School 7-2 in the final.

The team won seven of their nine games at the tournament, which saw 15 schools from across the county take part.

The county tournament followed a Bideford qualifying tournament and a North Devon tournament at Bideford College.

St Helen’s went through both of those tournaments unbeaten to progress to the county finals.

Coach Bekah Tanton said: “I thought the team had played excellently in the North Devon tournament but this was outstanding and exceeded all our hopes and dreams.

“What a joy and privilege to have shared their journey, their glory and their joy.”

The team of year six pupils said they were ‘shocked’ to have won the tournament and didn’t expect to go as far as they did.
