ILFRACOMBE Town claimed all three points in a comfortable afternoon at Longwell Green, winning 2-0 and leapfrogging above the club which was one place above them at the start of play.
Combe struggled in the final third of the pitch at home to Corsham the previous week and it seemed the same troubles were back for much of the first half. But while their previous game was all about two missed headers, this week it was about two scored as Combe finally made the telling passes count.
Manager Barry Yeo switched back to a 4-3-3 formation and Combe looked far more comfortable in possession. Tom Rossiter was a handful up front all afternoon and Steve Holland had a fine game on the right side of the attack, causing all sorts of trouble with his mazey runs. Jon Vooght and Ryan Turner were back in the starting line up and both looked full of running.
The first goal came near the end of the first half, when Lee Francis swung in a corner and Rossiter rose highest to head home. Combe continued to pile on the pressure but couldn’t find another goal before half time.
Longwell started the second half brightly and in the first few minutes forced keeper Steve Oliver into one of only a few saves he had to make all afternoon. But Combe soon regained control and dominated much of the possession for the rest of the half.
Their second goal came from another corner, this time Ross Middleton swung it in, James Mayne timed his run to perfection and powered the header towards goal. The keeper reacted brilliantly to keep it out, but Steve Holland was on hand to head home from two yards.
Combe continued to press for more goals and had a number of penalty claims waved away and the score remained 2-0.
Next up for Combe is a home game against in form Hallen
