BARNSTAPLE have turned to former Devon and club captain Jeremy Chugg to fill the gap while director of rugby Kevin Squire recovers from a broken hip.
Chugg got off the mark with a 35-8 win over Avonmouth Old Boys last Saturday and will be in charge until further notice.
Squire suffered the break in a fall from the roof of the ‘Chicken Shack’ mini seating area on the opposite side of the ground from the main grandstand at Pottington Road. A builder, he was doing some work on the roof when he fell.
“The doctors say Kevin will be in hospital for around a week, then it will take as long as it takes for the break to heal,” said Chugg.
Something which would have cheered Squire on the road to recovery was the win over Avonmouth, in which his son Josh scored 25 points in tries and kicks. Ryan Carter and Toby Williamson were the other try scorers.
Said Chugg: “It was boys against men and the boys won this one! Avonmouth were all men and struggled with the pace of our much more youthful side. When we turned them over and when we ran with the ball we were too quick for them.
“It got a bit fractious at the end with us going to down to 13 and Avonmouth having a sin-binning as well, but by then the game was won,
