THE greens of Devon have helped to raise £1,680 for the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal.
Carol Rockey of Bideford Bowling Club supported her husband John through chemo and radiotherapy after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. He has finished his treatment and is thankfully now in remission.
As she was Bowls Devon Ladies President for 2012, Carol resolved to give something back and nominated the appeal as her chosen charity for the year.
At every game she attended, a “spider” fund raiser was held, with everyone paying £1 to see who could get nearest the jack with a single wood, the winner receiving a bottle of wine.
“I was very lucky that I had several bottles of wine donated to help me out and all in all it was very successful,” said Carol.
“With my club’s help and a few private generous donations I managed to raise £1,680 which I handed over at our county AGM at Exeter in December.”
