CHANGES have been taking place at the Tarka Tennis Centre in Barnstaple over the past eight months, with the addition of the Falcons Gymnastics Academy over two of the outside courts.
Falcons, a local gymnastics club with more than 1,000 members, now have one of the best gymnastic halls in the country.
This has not only seen an increase in new children becoming involved in gymnastics, but there has also been a positive knock-on effect for Tarka Tennis.
Chris Gill, director of tennis, said: “We are running more courses for new tennis players than ever before, with an upsurge of new juniors and adults taking up tennis. The obvious impact of the Falcons club, the Olympics and Andrew Murray winning the US Open has meant more people are interested in taking up sport.
“We have seen numbers increase in all activities at Tarka from our tennis programme, junior football academy, Pilates studio, table tennis and general users. Tarka is becoming a real sports hub for North Devon, which is our aim and, hopefully, with potential new facility developments we can include other popular sports.
“We are also seeing the success of all our programmes with four Devon tennis county champions this year, one national champion, two gymnasts in the GB squad and many more athletes following them.”
Tarka is currently seeing around 2,800 people through the door every week is keen to increase this number and also to bring on board local businesses to support its sports activities and initiatives.”
To encourage more adults to have a go at tennis, Tarka will be running a free tennis coaching session every month, starting this month.
