Cheque for £474.70 handed to Cancer Research UK
NORTH Devon’s first rounders charity fun day was a huge success, raising plenty of smiles and almost £500 for Cancer Research UK.
The fun day took place at Barnstaple Rugby Club, with more than 100 players enjoying a sunny afternoon knockabout.
‘Ball Busters’ were crowned the winners of the family tournament and all received medals as well as the family tournament shield, sponsored by North Devon Flag.
The climax of the afternoon was undoubtedly the fiercely competitive mixed adult final. ‘It’s all about Pinney’ were ultimate victors, with ‘Master Batters’ a close second. The adult trophy was kindly sponsored by Eyewear Creations Ltd.
The event was supported by Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP), Barnstaple Rugby Club, Nicole Morrish Photography, County Renault, Mazda and Dacia, Rounders England, the Whiddon Fryer and Mabel’s Ices.
A number of local businesses and individuals also provided some great raffle prizes, including the star prize PS4, donated by Lycette Care.
Georgina Crossman, who coordinated the event, said: “We all had such a fantastic time - it was brilliant to see so many people enjoying rounders, many of whom hadn’t played since they were at school.
“It was a real team effort and everything came together on the day, including the weather! We would like to thank all those who helped make the day such a success, the players, families and friends and of course Barnstaple Rugby Club for hosting our event. We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year!”
This week the group presented a cheque for £474.70 to local fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK, Clive Pedwell.
“Thanks so much to all the team for their efforts and to all those who attended on the day and gave so generously,” he said. “Rest assured the funds will be put to good use.”
If you didn’t make the fun day but would like to give rounders a try, the group plays at Barnstaple Rugby Club on Wednesdays from 7-8pm. Each session costs £2 and is open to ladies aged 14 and over. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
