CONCEPT Staffing and other local businesses have provided a "helping oar" to enable Bideford Pilot Gig Club to secure its first racing boat.

The funding has allowed the club to purchase the second-hand racing boat Mystery from the Charlestown Gig Club.

Established in July by four local rowers, the Bideford club has now competed in such competitions as the Looe Regatta and the Appledore Regatta Sprint races.

Bideford Pilot Gig Club Secretary John Little said: "Thanks to the support of local companies such as Concept Staffing, within three months of establishing the club, we have raised enough money to purchase the Mystery as well as a trailer and boat cover.

"We are currently borrowing a set of oars which Appledore Gig Club has kindly lent us. Obviously our aim is to buy our own, so we are still on the look out for support."

Key account manager for Concept Staffing, Fiona Brandi, said: "At Concept we have a strong commitment to our community.

"The Bideford Pilot Gig Club is new to the area and I think it's important for us to get behind it and help it grow as a society the whole community can get involved with.
