Forty clubs descend on the east and west courses to compete for the jug
Forty golf clubs from across the six regions of the West of England arrived at Saunton Golf Club last week to compete for the annual Saunton Jug.
The better ball stableford competition saw teams of four with one pair on each of Saunton’s east and west courses with total combined handicaps restricted to a maximum 46.
With perfect conditions, scoring was predictably high, as evidenced by the pairing of Saunton chairman Paul Vicary and professional Albert Mackenzie.
Between them, they recorded nine consecutive threes on the east course including a run of six birdies from Albert.
The defending champions, Downes Crediton, also provided fierce competition but there was no stopping the Cornwall team from Bude, who beat Saunton by two points to claim this year’s jug.
