Top women’s tennis returns to the Tarka Tennis Centre this week

Qualifying for the AEGON GB Pro-series Barnstaple finished at the Tarka Tennis Centre on Tuesday with a number of good wins for British girls.

Pride of place goes to 15-year-old Jodie Burrage, who beat top seed Camilla Rosatello 6-4, 7-5 to qualify for her first main draw at this level of pro tennis.

Burrage, whose mum is from Barnstaple, and has grandparents living in the town, now plays fellow Brit Francesca Stephenson (a wild card) in Wednesday’s main draw matches.

Six of the eight qualifiers were British, with Charlotte Pearce continuing her impressive run over the last month. Pearce’s defeat of Laura Deigman has guaranteed the 20-year-old her first world ranking, having now won ranking points in all of her last three pro event appearances.

Two other Brits who have made it through qualifying un-seeded - Aimee Gibson and Natasha Hillyer.

Gibson recovered from losing the first set to beat Danielle Konotoptseva 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, while Hillyer comprehensively beat seventh seeded German player Kim-Alice Grajdek 6-2, 6-1.

Lucy Brown, seeded five, and Lauren McMinn, seeded nine, complete the six Brits who have all made it through.

The main draw starts today (Wednesday) with an intriguing match-up between top seed Sofia Arvidsson, and fast rising British teenager Katy Dunne.

Arvidsson, who has been ranked inside the top 30, is one of eight main draw players who have just returned from playing at the US Open, while 19-year-old Dunne has climbed more than 400 places since the start of the year.

There are a host of other intriguing matches including fast-rising Dutch teenager Indy De Vroome, seeded four in Barnstaple, against Naomi Cavaday, who has recently made a return to pro tennis having previously been ranked inside the top 200.

British number five Tara Moore takes on Italian Jasmine Paolini.
