Reds and Blues face off on home waters this weekend in West of England series
Bideford’s rowing clubs were again in action at the weekend, this time slugging it out at Torquay regatta.
With just two race meets to go after Torquay, the results could be crucial as the Reds picked up three wins and the Blues came away with two victories.
The most telling of those came in the ladies’ junior 16 quad, where the Blues’ Shannon Monaghan, Charlottie Berry, Kirsty Snow, Abie Lawson and cox Colin Pennington edged clear of the Reds to win the race and go joint top with their local rivals in the championship.
The Blues were also successful in the men’s masters coxed four, taking an easy victory ahead of Teignmouth.
The Reds’ top performance of the day came from the junior 16 quad of Dan Crowther, Nick Wilson, Alex Rowland and Ross Bennett, who edged themselves into championship contention following their third consecutive win on the circuit. The boys held off a crew from Plymouth to cross the line two boat lengths clear.
Also picking up wins for the Reds were the mixed novice four of Kimberley Pickett, Tanja Brackenbury, Dan Talbot and Drew Mackenzie as well as the men’s senior C four of Adam Curtis, James Williams, Jon Lamont and Richard Prust.
The West of England regatta circuit is now nearing its conclusion, with a busy week for both Bideford clubs ahead.
They head to Dartmouth on Thursday before the final regatta of the season on Saturday on home waters in Bideford.
