Bideford Ladies completed a Westward Developments Devon County League local derby double at home to Barnstaple on Sunday.
With both teams having improved since their last meeting, which went 6-0 in Bideford’s favour, this proved a closer affair, with Bideford running out 2-1 winners.
Bideford dominated the early exchanges, with Beth Ellis carrying the ball down the line and crossing into the area on several occasions, but they failed to convert their chances.
Barnstaple found a gap in the defence and were through on goal, but a fine tackle by Nat Taylor cleared the ball for a corner.
This kept Bideford on their toes and they hit back when confusion in the Barnstaple box allowed Caz Parsons in for the opening goal. Bideford kept up the pressure, but more chanced went begging before Beth Ellis cut in from the right and hit an unstoppable shot to make it 2-0 score at halftime.
Bideford seemed to switch off after the break and were indebted to the intervention of man-of-the-match Nat Taylor as Barnstaple pressed forward.
A quick break enabled Barnstaple to pull a goal back to set up an exciting finish. Bideford ‘super sub’ Lois Collins seemed to have made the game safe with a third goal, only to have it disallowed. But they held on for the win and now look forward to next week’s fixture in the cup.
Ilfracombe resumed their winning ways in a 10-goal thriller at home to Tavistock.
It was a hard match in which Combe had to come from behind.
They turned a 1-0 deficit into a narrow 3-2 lead before hitting a purple patch to stretch 6-2 ahead.
But even then Tavvy were not done as they pulled two goals back in the later stages for a final 6-4 scoreline.
Keely Coates hit a hat-trick for Combe and their other goals came from Sarah Dennis, Hannah Wharby and Jordan Davey.
