BIDEFORD’S Calor Southern League Premier promotion push suffered a major setback on Saturday as they were dealt their first home defeat since December by a solid-looking Arlesey Town side.

The Robins fell to a second consecutive league defeat and now find themselves outside of the play-off positions with only eight more games to play.

The first half was a relatively quiet affair which the home side edged, but failed to create enough clear-cut chances to find a breakthrough.

But another good crowd – 224 made their way into the Sports Ground on Saturday – got behind Bideford and did their best to lift their side.

Arlesey had lost four of their previous five league games, but looked a far more solid proposition on Saturday, and after a string of near misses found themselves in front in the 70th minute.

Arlesey frontman Hallelujah Basmel, whose pace and running caused the Bideford defence difficulty all day, who broke the deadlock.

Basmel was played in behind the Bideford backline and having been foiled by ‘keeper Steve Oliver on a number of occasions, he was this time able to hold his nerve and dink the ball into the net.

After conceding for the first time in nearly a month, Bideford did their best to get back on terms but despite half chances for Kevin Squires it was not to be their day.

The Robins are back in action with a trip to Chippenham Town on Saturday.
