Bideford out-shoot Fonthill to reach final

BIDEFORD Target Shooting Club’s B team has earned the right to represent Devon in the Kynoch Shield next month.

Bideford B will take on Cornwall again this year, meaning the club will have represented the county in three of the last four years.

The event is run on a knock-out basis through the winter months, with teams of six from Devon clubs competing against each other to progress to the next round.

Each member of a team has to fire one card of ten shots against a chosen ‘start’ figure – with the aim being to achieve the perfect score of 100 when that ‘start’ is added to the score they achieve. In earlier rounds, the B team had beaten Pinhoe’s A team and also their own A team to progress to the county final at Okehampton on Sunday, where they took on Fonthill.

On the first detail of two shooters from each team, honours were even – Sarah Pile was one shot adrift of her goal while Michael Coombs shot a 92 on his eight start to give him the required 100, as the two Fonthill shooters matched them.

On the second detail, Adie Pile achieved his ton while Alex Raymont was just one away, but the Fonthill pairing were three shots short between them, giving Bideford a two-point advantage going into the last pair.

Jon Morris and Yvonne Hoile held their nerve to shoot two perfect scores, while Fonthill dropped behind by a further shot, giving Bideford the match with a stunning score of 598 against Fonthill’s 595.

The local club will now travel to St. Austell at the end of March to meet the Cornish champions, which will be either City of Truro or Penzance & St Ives, to decide the winner of the Kynoch Shield for 2014.

Bideford’s A team won the shield in 2011 and 2012, and now the B team will be aiming to bring the shield back to Devon again.
