Brixham 31-26 Barnstaple
BARNSTAPLE welcome former coach Danny Thomas back to Pottington Road this Saturday when Chippenham pay a visit.
Braunton boy Thomas had two seasons with Barum after leaving Taunton, where he was player coach, before the long-distance commute from his home in Bristol got too much of a bind.
Thomas went to Chippenham this season and after a patchy start results are starting to improve.
As a former Barnstaple player as well – he turned out in the red and white before turning professional with Plymouth Albion in 2000 – Thomas can be confident of a warm welcome from the grandstand.
However, old friendships will be put aside for 80 minutes as Barnstaple look to bounce back from their 31-26 defeat at Brixham last time out.
Barnstaple followers will feel it was a game their side lost rather than Brixham won, although that may do the Fishermen a disservice.
Brixham had won their previous three games with a score in the final five minutes, proving the benefits of keeping going until the final whistle.
Barnstaple shot of into a 15-0 lead at Brixham with Ryan Brend and Ryan Carter both scoring tries. Matt Down converted one and a penalty.
Brixham snapped back to go 19-15 up, but a Down penalty just before the break left a point in it.
Crash-bang it went through the second half with Barum battering the Brixham defence but not able to get through.
Brixham went further ahead with a Jarryd Harris try, only for Winston James to crash over and leave a point in it again. A Down penalty nudged Barum back in front.
The game was in the last four minutes when Brixham’s Russ Morris scored the decisive try.
Back at Pottington Road there was a one-way encounter between the 2nd XV and their Brixham counterparts, which Barum won 50-5. Luke Berry claimed five tries from full-back and will be pressing for a 1st XV recall against Chippenham.
