BARNSTAPLE quickly put their defeat by Old Reds behind them with a hard-earned 31-22 win over visiting Weston.

Barum were 26-5 up early in the second half and might have expected close the game out.

Weston had other ideas though and got back to 26-17 with 15 minutes to go to set up a grandstand finish

Ryan Brend scored Barum’s first try when the overlap was created and he went through it.

A penalty try followed for an episode while Barnstaple were going for a push-over which earned Weston stand-off Kirl Middlemass a trip to the sin-bin.

A third try followed for prop Shane Maddock, who was the third man in another overlap move.

Two Will Topps conversions had the tally up to 19-0 before Weston got a try back.

Blind-side flanker George Sparks made a run for the line and when he was stopped lock Dave Bufton picked up the pieces.

When Weston lost possession at the first line-out after the break, Barum worked the ball to Ryan Carter for a try Topps converted.

Then Weston started to claw it back, starting with a penalty try for an infringement that earned Barum lock Tom Skelding some bin time. Dan Lomax converted in the absence of James McKay due to injury.

Middlemass waltzed through on the dummy for Weston as the comeback gathered pace.

When Weston had Bufton sin-binned, Barum used their extra man to put Tom Heard in for a try.

Sparks went all the way for a stoppage-time try that earned Weston a losing bonus point.

Barnstaple have no game now until Boxing Day when they entertain Bideford in the annual festive derby.
