RMB Chivenor Memorial Garden adopted as the main charity for new annual race
An annual marathon and half marathon will be coming to Barnstaple next year.
The mayor of Barnstaple, Cllr Lesley Brown, announced that the first race, being organised by the North Devon Road Runners with support from the Royal Marine Association North Devon branch, will be held on Sunday September 28, 2014.
The RMB Chivenor Memorial Garden has been adopted by the NDRR as the main charity which will be supported with an annual donation. The new event also has the backing of Macmillan Cancer Support and local charities such as Autism Smiles.
The race will start and finish at Rock Park in Barnstaple and will incorporate sections of the Tarka Trail and will pass around the airfield perimeter road at RMB Chivenor. This very flat, very fast course will provide a thrilling race for competitors young and old and should bring a large number of people to the area at the back-end of the summer season.
“This mass participation event is a wonderful opportunity for runners and non-runners alike to gain their personal best times and show their support for this event,” said NDRR secretary Simon Haywood.
“We enjoy close relations with RMB Chivenor and the North Devon Road Runners are hugely proud to be associated with this unique and very special cause.”
RMA Branch Chairman John Peel “The RMA North Devon Branch is thrilled that NDRR are putting on this event and that we are able to be involved and assist with the race. The Memorial Garden fund is special to the RMA and we are honoured that we can show our support to our comrades, both serving and fallen, by supporting this exciting event”.
The race is already attracting lots of local attention with businesses including Slee Blackwell and Trophyman in Barnstaple keen to get on board as sponsors.
Runners can register online or register their interest in helping out on the day at www.northdevonroadrunners.com. Businesses interested in sponsoring the event can contact Simon Haywood on email@example.com.
