Wells City 5-1 Barnstaple Town
Barnstaple Town were hit by another reality check on Tuesday night as they were comprehensively beaten by Wells City.
Barnstaple travelled to Somerset boosted by the return of key man Billy Tucker, hoping to bounce back after back-to-back defeats to Chard and Portishead.
But that positivity didn’t last too long as they found themselves 2-0 down and down to 10 men.
Howson and Begg got Wells’ goals before goalkeeper Ryan Draper saw red for Town.
Francis Rolli made it three shortly after, before Barnstaple found a way back into the game through Tucker from the penalty spot.
That foothold was gone three minutes later when Begg netted to restore their three goal advantage and Russell rounded off a big win for Wells on a difficult night for Tom Bulley’s Barnstaple.
Barnstaple have now slipped to fourth in the Toolstation Western League First division, and, crucially, are 12 points behind leaders Bradford Town. Until last week, Barnstaple had not lost in the league, winning eight and drawing one of their first nine fixtures.
Town will have the chance to get back to winning ways in the first round of the FA Vase on Saturday, when they travel to Almondsbury.
