BARNSTAPLE Town’s first home game of the season didn’t quite go to plan on Tuesday night as they were beaten by a strong Wincanton Town side by three goals to one.

Town seemed to be on track to build on their 5-0 opening day win at Ashton and Backwell when last season’s 30-goal forward Billy Tucker put them in front on the half hour mark.

And despite getting through to half time unscathed, Barnstaple were then torn apart for much of the second half as they failed to deal with Wincanton’s attacking threat.

Wincanton were level within seconds of the restart, and after battling to stay in the game then found themselves behind with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Barry Yeo’s men were unable to muster a late assault on the visitors’ goal, and the game was put beyond doubt five minutes from time when Wincanton made it 3-1.

Barnstaple now turn their attentions to the FA Cup, facing Peninsula League Witheridge at Mill Road on Saturday.

Their next league game is at Portishead Town next Tuesday.
