...and ITV’s cameras will be at Mill Road this weekend
Barnstaple Town enjoyed a dream start to life in Toolstation Western League Division One with an 8-1 drubbing of Corsham Town at Mill Road.
Town were unrecognisable from the team which was relegated from the Premier last season with only three wins to their name as they went about demolishing last season’s fourth-placed finishers Corsham – and came up just one goal short of an opening day league record set in 1956.
Former Ilfracombe Town midfielder Lee Francis put Barum ahead early on, before Corsham drew level inside 15 minutes.
The goals thern began to flow for the home side, who took a 4-1 lead into the half-time break thanks to further goals from Maksym Kowal and two from Ryan Turner.
Town didn’t let off in the second half and Turner completed a fine hat-trick with over half an hour of the contest still to spare.
Billy Tucker got his first since re-joining the club from the penalty spot, Kowal scored a great individual goal and Scott Sharp completed the rout for the home side in front of a crowd of over 200.
“I’m delighted,” said Barnstaple manager Tom Bulley. “All the hard work over the last few months seems to be paying off.
“I don’t think this would have happened without the people and the players at the club at the moment. We’ve come a long way.
“I’ve had people coming up to me that have been going to watch Barnstaple for 30 or 40 years saying they’ve never seen anything like it before.
“It’s quite scary to think that performance is only after a couple of proper training sessions.
“But we have to remember it’s only one game so the focus now is on Chard and continuing with that form.”
Town are now looking forwards to Wednesday night’s trip to Chard Town, which fans can travel to on the team bus for just £5.
They’ve also been boosted by the news that the ITV cameras will be at Mill Road for their FA cup tie against Brislington on Saturday.
“We’re all looking forward to it,” added Bulley. “It’s good publicity for the club and a pretty big deal.
“These are exciting times for the club.”
