Barnstaple got back to winning ways at home in National League Two South on Saturday.

After a run of three defeats, Barum picked up a 37-24 win over Clifton that was ultimately comfortable thanks to a fifth try three minutes from time.

Clifton shot into a 14-0 lead thanks to two early tries – one each for Brian Watters and Callum Roberts - and Barum’s first task was to claw back the two-try deficit.

By half time Barnstaple had gone 27-17 up and they were never behind in the game again.

It got a bit tense with 15 minutes to go when Clifton pulled a try back to trail 30-24 and the next score would prove crucial.

Ashlee Crouch came up with a try for Barnstaple, which Jake Murphy converted, and the 37-24 margin meant Clifton had to score three times in less than 10 minutes to snatch the game, which was unlikely to happen.

First-half scorers for Barnstaple were Gareth Hauler, Oli Mason, James Starkey and Will Topps with Murphy supplying a penalty and two conversions.

Chris Levesley converted both Clifton’s first-half tries and added a penalty.

A Murphy penalty extended the lead to 30-17.

Clifton got a try back through second row Henry Harper, but replacement Crouch made sure it was Barum’s day and no one else’s.

Barnstaple are away to Henley Hawks this Saturday, who drew 25-25 with Old Redcliffians last time out.
