THE east wind was biting but the fish were not as North Devon’s sea anglers struggled during bitterly cold conditions at the weekend.

The first Barnstaple Rod ‘n’ Reelers roving competition of the year saw a three-bearded rockling of 1lb 7 ounce secure first place for Steve Baker, while Paul Ackland’s dogfish of 2lb 1 ¼ gave him second. Darren Short was third with a rockling of 1lb 2oz.

Steve’s fish was to be the only fish weighed in at the later January heat of the North Devon League hosted by Combe Martin SAC at Braunton Cricket Club, ensuring him top spot in both.

The next North Devon League heat is on Saturday, February 16, with the Sunday weigh in at Bideford Angling Club.
