Torridge District Council and Active Devon are working together to create an all inclusive sports club for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities in the Torridge and North Devon area.
The Strawberry Club will be based in Great Torrington sports hall, but will be open to anyone with learning difficulties or disabilities to try their hand at a sport.
Lead member for health and wellbeing and Torrington Ward Councillor Andy Boyd said: “Initially the club will run for eight weeks, with plenty of opportunities for people to try different sports. This is a great chance for people to have a go at something they’ve never tried before, or carry on doing something they enjoy, with qualified and experienced coaches.”
Each week will offer a varied and diverse range of sports activities such as multi-skills athletics, trampolining, table tennis, boccia, Frisbee, football and more, all led by Level 2 qualified sports coaches. At the end of the eight weeks the more popular sports will continue as the club grows.
The sessions will run in Great Torrington sports hall between 2pm and 4pm every Sunday from January 20, costing just £2 per person, per week. Great Torrington Swimming Pool also runs a Strawberry Swim Club between 4pm and 5pm so after the club participants can also have dedicated swim time. The swimming sessions will have an additional cost of £1.95.
