The start of the winter indoor bowling season saw a first round loss for North Devon IBC in the National Over 60s double rink at the hands of Isca.

But the initial loss was followed two days later by a tremendous win in the first round of the National Singles.

North Devon`s James Withers travelled to Exonia to take on short mat international Phil Atkins.

He soon found himself 0–7, 7–14, 12-17 and a depressing 14–20 down. Calling on all his youthful experience and winning an end, he walked the mat up the green to a minimum length and immediately took three shots from his opponent. He followed this with a double and two single shots to take the lead for the first time and win the match 21–20.
