It was a thrilling end to a long league season for members of Kingsley School Judo Club as 30 young fighters took part in the club’s latest league festival event.

The event has been running throughout the year with four festivals in total, allowing fighters to collect points for their performances and, more importantly, motivating them to improve.

All the children are mixed into age, weight and ability categories for the individual event before then being split into groups for the afternoon team competition.

Cameron Lavelle held onto a 2-0 lead to secure a victory over Jamie Steer to win gold in the boys’ top weight category, while Josh Steer won four fights by Ippon to win gold in the boys’ middleweight class after beating Louis Mathers in the final.

In the girls’ lightweight group, Jersey Ledger won a silver medal after a narrow defeat in the final to Amie McMurray.

In the extra lightweight boys’ division, gold was won by Cullum McMurray, who won all of his fights to finish in first place with silver going to Harvey Edwards.

Kitty Lavelle won gold in a mixed top ability group after winning five out of five contests, with Zach McMurray winning silver.

In the boys’ lightweight group, Rueben Stacey fought his way to the gold medal after winning four bouts, while Thomas Williams won the silver with two wins

The team event was won by Jersey Ledger, Harvey Williams, Fin Dean, Liam Stapleton, Kitty Lavelle and Oliver McQullium, who all contributed to their 4-3 first bout victory and their 5-2 win in the final to claim gold.

“The event was brilliant, with all our young fighters showing great improvements in there attitude to sport and competing,” said coach Simon Ward. “There was lovely involvement with lots of laughs and proud parents supporting not just their own children but really wishing all the fighters well and keeping their spirits up even when things did get tough.”

The overall league winners for the year will be announced at a special club presentation evening in January, with special guest Ben Fletcher, a Great Britain senior fighter and former world junior bronze medallist.
