Reds row to victory at Totnes regatta
BIDEFORD Amateur Rowing Club had a successful day at the second West of England Championship Regatta of the season at Totnes on Saturday, coming away with five wins, including the Ladies Novice Eights.
Although the Reds do not have their own eights boat they were indebted to the home Totnes club for the loan of a boat - and eventually beat them in the final!
The successful crew comprised Laura Atkinson, Rebecca Parkyn, Charlotte Staddon, Sophie Lamont, Sharon Owen, Casey Kepple-Compton, Jo Owen and Louise Parker with Matt Lamont as coxswain.
Another victory came in the men's junior 16 quad four, in which Luis Wilkins, Karl Rowland, Matt and Jon Lamont and coxswain Tasmin Chillcott edged home by a 6ft canvas margin from rivals Totnes.
Wilkins and Rowlands then secured an easier victory in the double sculls. where they again beat a crew from the home club in the final.
Other wins came in the mixed senior B fours through the efforts of Hannah Bright, Judith Atherton, James Williams and Andy Maynard, while in the ladies under-18 fours Sophie Lamont, Charlotte Staddon, Rebecca Parkyn and Laura Atkinson beat local rivals Bideford Blues only after a re-row of the race.
This week the championship moves up to Exmoor when the Wimbleball Club hosts the third round.
